Sometimes I just have random thoughts to share. Topics may vary, depending on my ever-changing mood. The views of this blogger may not reflect your own, so please be tolerant or exercise your sense of humor while reading. I have been known to use sarcasm enthusiastically.

I’d like to thank the members of the Academy and the big man upstairs…

That’s not a religious reference. I’m talking about The Complete Package. He’s working from home and he’s upstairs as I type this. Thanks for your support, honey. Couldn’t have done it without you. If you’re scratching your head and wondering what the H-E-doublehockeysticks I’m talking about, it’s this:

That’s right…it’s a “passed along by a fellow blogger who in turn chose me to spotlight” award from my hilarious friend Amy over at Fix it or Deal. I have a confession to make. This is not my first. I’m not bragging, I promise. I got one of these a few weeks ago from one of my BBFFs (best blogging friends forever) Kirsten, way up north at Comfortably Domestic. I didn’t mention it back then because I totally thought it was a typo. I felt like she probably meant to mention someone else, but her fingers slipped and she accidentally typed “inside nanabread’s head.” But now that I’ve been gifted with a second one, I feel like maybe it wasn’t an error. Maybe someone actually IS reading my blog! Maybe, like Stuart Smalley, I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it…people like me! Or maybe I just have really thoughtful blogging friends. Thanks, ladies. I appreciate the fact that you could have chosen any number of other bloggers, but you chose me. That means a lot. You didn’t have to love me, but you did, but you did, but you did…and I thank you.

If I’m reading the fine print correctly, I’m now contractually obligated (kidding! There’s no contract, is there?) to list five of my favorite things and five of my favorite blogs. I hope you’ll visit each of them. Here we go:

5 Favorite Things:
1. time with my family (a true no-brainer; I love my family)
2. traveling – wherever, whenever; I just want to GO!
3. movies that make me laugh or think (ex. Zombieland, Fargo, Fractured)
4. anything smeared with dark chocolate – pretzels, peanut butter, grandkids
5. baby animals; I can’t resist them. Who’s a little cutie patootie…you are!

5 Blogs I’m Obsessed With:
1. Kandiland Blog – by my friend Kandi. She’s smart, she’s funny, she’s sometimes goofy and I love that. Her story about a camel ride made me laugh until I cried. The Complete Package refers to her as my “commenter of discriminating taste” because she seems to agree with him a lot. But I don’t hold against them. Most of the time {wink}. Her deeply personal stories about her life with two beautiful girls, her hard-working husband, and her spastic black lab Charlie keep me laughing. She’s a force of nature, and I like that. A lot.

2. Laundry & Vodka – by my friend Alex in the great state of Georgia. I found Alex through the Pioneer Woman website. She posted a comment and the name of her blog instantly grabbed me. I clicked the link to see what she was up to, and have read her every day since. Alex is pregnant with her first baby (it’s a girl!) and writes about her life with a military husband and her three canine children – Nigel, Nash and Natalie. She hooked me with a short little ditty about a creepy Sponge Bob balloon, and now I feel like we’ve been friends forever.

3. A Sweet Pea Chef – by Lacey in Austin, Texas. I can’t claim to love Lacey just because she’s a Texan. She’s actually a San Diegan who recently moved to Texas. But as we say in the Republic… “we don’t care how you got here, we’re just glad you did!” If I dreamed of being a food blogger, I’d want to be like Lacey. Her recipes are top-notch and her food photography makes me want to lick my computer screen. It’s like food porn. Sometimes I open her blog and gasp. The best part is that I’ve never tried a recipe from her blog that I didn’t like. I mean really, really like. Her panko crusted tilapia still haunts me. Deliciously.

4. Gingerbread Bagels – by Lindsey the baker. I love a good cookie, but damn! I don’t know anyone who loves cake or baking like this girl. She is one of those rare people who have a true calling or talent, and she knows how to use it. She wields a spatula the way Van Gogh worked a paint brush. She is an artist. I’m blown away every week by the desserts she masters and the easy-going, humorous way she shares them with her readers. I’m a “salty” not a “sweet” but she may just convert me. I wish I loved ANY food the way she loves Nutella.

5. The rules probably state that you can’t nominate those who nominated you, but that’s just tough noogies, because this wouldn’t be my favorites list without Fix It or Deal and Comfortably Domestic. I found Amy at FIOD through another blog, and laughed out loud at her stories about slutty Halloween costumes and a magic washcloth. When I read her article “Zombie, Zombie Burning Bright” I knew I was sunk. I can only dream of being that funny. Her monthly posting of undead creatures from her 2011 zombie calendar keep me on the edge of my seat. I found Kirsten from CD through the Pioneer Woman website. We got to know each other through recipes and comments, and I now believe we are actually twins separated at birth…except that I’m eight years older and live halfway across the country. Sure, there’s some weird science involved, but I’m still a believer. She’s the mother of 4 boys, which I sort of relate to since I’m one of five daughters. Living with that much testosterone is a foreign concept to me, but I enjoy her take on it immensely. I love these ladies more than chocolate.

Someone asked me last week what I love about blogging, and this is it – the friends I’ve made and the stories we’ve shared. My blogging buddies are like members of my big, extended family without the arguing or name-calling, and I appreciate them more than I can adequately articulate. I feel the same way about the readers who visit my blog and choose to return over and over again. I started this blog eight months ago, and I’m still amazed that people read it. And as long as we’re all having fun, I plan to continue. Thank you for your support and encouragement. It’s been a great ride so far, and I’ve enjoyed every minute.

A note to the bloggers mentioned above: you are under no obligation to pass this award along. You may exercise your free will at any time and simply smile and pat yourselves on the back, if you so choose. Or you can join the fun and pass it along to those you admire. Your choice. That’s the deal. Free shipping & handling. Limited time offer. Thank you for calling Time Life Books.

Ode to Aging: My Own Birthday Poem

A panty liner, long and thin
guards my dignity if when
laughing, coughing, sneezing deems
my bladder weaker than it seems.

It’s on in every situation
adding to my irritation
which, it seems, will not abate.
Today, I’m turning 48.

Don’t send your pity; please don’t weep
because my fluids tend to seep.
If I encounter apprehension
there’s always bladder re-suspension.

For now, there’s gray hair and hot flashes,
peach fuzz beards and light moustaches,
night sweats, dry skin, sleepless nights
with no apparent end in sight.

We “older” women understand
that hormones deal a crappy hand,
and that’s what keeps us all in stitches.
You’re turn’s coming, younger bitches!

I’ve said my piece and had some fun.
My feeble diatribe is done.
I know there’s nothing I can do,
But in my heart…I’m 32.

Poem by NanaBread.
All rights reserved,
because I could be named
Poet Laureate after this.
Or not.

Special thanks to my
family and friends for
another spectacular
year. I couldn’t have
done it without you.
Much love to you all.
Peace out!

It’s not easy being green…

Ladies, I’d like your opinion. On a scale of 1 to 10, how obnoxious is my new nail polish? It’s totally not me, but I couldn’t resist it…like a jelly donut when you KNOW you don’t need it. I found it at the grocery store, and picked it up for St. Patrick’s Day and our annual Hoegarden “girls only” estrogen-filled weekend coming up in March. So tell the truth…does it make you nauseous, or does it scream “wow, she’s a fun girl” or does it inspire you to put on a pair of short shorts and go outside? Does it make you think of Kermit the Frog or the split-pea soup fiasco of The Exorcist? Do you want to hurl your Thin Mints, or does your heart sing with a sense of reckless abandonment? I really want to know. Before you vote, however, I should also tell you that I bought a vibrant turquoise color to go with it. Couldn’t stop myself. Blue and green are my favorite colors. As you can tell from this second photo, the green alone was not enough for me. At The Complete Package’s urging, I painted turquoise spots onto my neon lime nails. Why not? As long as there’s nail polish remover in the cabinet and cotton balls in the drawer, why NOT go nuts once in a while. Party like a rock star. Lose your mind. Free your soul. Act like a 14 year old girl. Live life on the edge. Over dramatize the fact that you painted your normally nude nails. You only live once, right? Here’s your chance to put in your 2 cents. Tell the truth, ladies…what do YOU think?

Note: The nail polish I purchased is Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri Fast Dry Nail Color in #450 Lickety-Split Lime and #430 Brisk Blue. They’re wild, they’re wonderful, and they dry within minutes. What’s not to love about that?

What do I love? Let me count the ways.

I love my family. My husband, The Complete Package. My daughter and her sweet husband. My mother, my four sisters, my mother-in-law and our big extended families. We are blessed to be part of such a large, wonderful clan.

I love my grandbabies – Jonah Bear and Lilly Bug. When I see My Baby with her sweet babies, I am transported back to those days when she was little. I see so much of her in them, with Bama Boy thrown in. And I see myself and TCP in them, too. They are little extensions of everyone in our family in many ways.

I love my dog. He’s old and he snores and insists on having his way all the time. But he’s cute, and he’s sweet, and he snuggles with me when I’m sick and he plays with me when I’m happy and he never leaves my side. He’s my buddy.

I love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on soft, fresh oat nut bread and grilled cheese on a good hearty white bread with real butter. Lots of butter.

I love Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream.

I love my top 5 movies: It’s A Wonderful Life, Forrest Gump, Benjamin Button, The Notebook and The Princess Bride.

I love a good cup of Lola Savannah Hawaiian Grog coffee with one spoon of sugar and a heap of low fat Coffeemate in it. And I sometimes switch it up with a cup of Stash black chai tea with my favorite Savannah Bee Black Sage Honey. That stuff is liquid gold.

I love flannel pajama pants, worn t-shirts and fuzzy socks in the wintertime.

I love baby animals, but who doesn’t?

I love my Jeep Liberty. It’s a 2003 with 115,000 miles on it. It’s silver with black leather interior. When I got it, I named it after Brad Pitt. When friends asked why, I told them it was because it was pretty enough to take out somewhere nice, but I wouldn’t mind getting dirty with it, too. In my defense, I’d just seen Legends of the Fall. Get it? Handsome, rugged…it made sense at the time.

I love pancakes. Light, fluffy pancakes. Sometimes with fruit, sometimes with chocolate chips, or bananas, or pumpkin. And TCP’s buttermilk pecan waffles.

I love Asics running shoes. That’s my brand. They fit me perfectly.

I love pasta, chili and soup better on the second day.

I love my Tempurpedic mattress. It’s like sleeping on a cloud.

I love snow, but I don’t get to see it much since I moved to Houston.

I love Chinese and Mexican food enough to rotate them every other day.

I love the mountains, I love the rolling hills, I love the flowers, I love the daffodils, I love the fireflies when all the lights are low, boom-dee-otta, boom-dee-otta, boom-dee-otta, boom-dee-otta.

I love the girls in my Bunco group. We all worked together at one time or another at the same elementary school. Some work there still. And 15 years later, we’re still making each other laugh until our cheeks hurt.

I love the almost life-size black bear The Complete Package bought us on our vacation to Disney World. My Baby and I walked past him and pet him in the gift shop of the Wilderness Lodge every day for a week. One week after we got home, he arrived on our front porch. BEST…VACATION…SOUVENIER…EVER!

I love music. I could listen to it all day long, over and over again. I love all kinds of music. Except country music. Sorry.

I love dark chocolate anything. Pretzels? Yup. Cake? Yes ma’am. Cookies, brownies, out of the package in big chunks? You betcha.

I love that you may just still be reading this mess this far into it. So I love you, dear readers. You don’t need flowers or candy or cards or dinner in a fancy restaurant to make you feel special today. You just need love. And I love ya’. Happy Valentine’s Day.

Dreaming of warm, sandy beaches…

It’s cold in Houston today. Really cold, or at least really cold for us. I should be grateful. I have family in Tulsa, Oklahoma where they are experiencing their snowiest winter ever. I also have family in northwestern Arkansas, where they’ve had ice and snow for weeks on end. And I have family in the Dallas area, where the ice and snow gained national attention with Sunday’s Super Bowl game. And yet, here I sit…snuggled up with my dog, wearing two pairs of thick socks and sweatpants, drinking hot coffee, contemplating lighting the gas logs, and day-dreaming of far away places with warm, sandy beaches. I’m cold, and it’s my coping mechanism. To those of you who are being held in a death grip by Old Man Winter, I send you warm wishes and my hope that sunshine and warmth will replace frozen misery very soon, and day dreams of warm, sandy beaches.

A Photo Assignment: Flowers

The Pioneer Woman is hosting a photo contest on her website this week. The topic – flowers. I got me thinking about some of the photos I’ve taken of flowers over the years, so I dug through my personal photo files. There are some good ones, there are some favorites, there are some that are not contest worthy, but still lovely to look at. It makes me happy to look at flowers. I like to have them in my house whenever possible. I make a point of visiting gardens when I travel. It just makes me feel better. It’s like nature therapy. Like a walk through a zen garden. So in the interest of sharing than zen feeling with you, my friends, I invite you to slow down, take a moment, and enjoy the flowers. Think of it as a bouquet from me to you. Because you’re special. And I love ya’.

More Photos of My Dog…sorry.

This is how Ziggy likes to nap…covered in a blanket on our leather sofa. No, he’s not spoiled. Why do you ask? It worries me that he hangs his head off like this. I’m afraid he’s going to slide right off the couch one day and land on his head.If I slept like this, I’d have a migrane – and I’d rather iron than have a migrane.
Did you know Ziggy snores when he sleeps? Yup – he snores like an old fat man.Sometimes he sleeps with his eyes half-way open. It gives me the heebie jeebies.
I love his little pink tummy with those black spots. It’s so very soft, that tummy. He also has 9 white toenails and 1 black one on his hands (Bowie flashback!).
Oops! Looks like I woke him up. Camera? What? No, there’s no camera, Zigman.
Go back to sleep. Wait…maybe he is asleep! I can’t tell. What does he have against posing for a few photos? I don’t get it. Honestly, it’s starting to irritate me. Other people’s dogs don’t seem to mind. Pioneer Woman’s dogs pose for her, and they look adorable while doing it! One of these days Ziggy is going to give up and learn to pose for me. And then pigs will fly. He’s such a diva.

Let’s Play a Game of ‘Deserted Island’

Hey, kids…want to have some fun? Let’s play a game. For this game, imagine yourself stranded alone on a deserted island a la Tom Hanks in Cast Away. (Please tell me you’ve seen Cast Away. I love that movie!) Here are my rules:

1. You must name the three (3) things you would like to take or have with you
2. You cannot take along another person or people; remember, you are alone
3. You must be able to carry your 3 items in a regulation (school) size backpack
4. You can’t say “plane ticket” because there would be no airplane or airport
5. Rule #4 applies to all forms of transportation you could not carry with you

You get extra points for creativity. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Wilson is a perfectly acceptable answer.

P.S. – Tom Hanks was totally robbed of the “Best Actor” Oscar for Cast Away in 2000. Robbed, I tell ya! I cried like a baby when he lost his volleyball. His VOLLEYBALL! That was some crazy good acting. Damn you, Russell Crowe.

P.S.S.
– My 3 items are a knife, a tarp and flint. My momma didn’t raise no fool. But if I knew I’d be rescued quickly, I’d take a knife, a salt shaker and tequila.

“I Heart Faces” Contest Entry – Ziggy

Ziggy, Zigman, Zig-Zig, the Zigmeister, Stinky Pete

This is my little stinky man. He will be 12 in April, which is really hard to believe. I vividly remember bringing him home at 6 weeks, when he was only about 5 inches tall. He was the most adorable puppy you’ve ever seen with his wee squishy face. He was sweet and snuggly, and prone to spastic fits of energy followed by long stretches of napping. Twelve years later, it’s the same story. He has a occaisional burst of energy followed by hours of napping, but now it’s accompanied by loud snoring and outbreaks of rancid gas. He’s still sweet and snuggly; it just takes a little more intestinal fortitude on our part. Still, he’s the greatest dog ever. I wouldn’t trade him for a thousand non-gassy, non-snoring pups. He’s my little man, our furry son, and he makes each day better just by being here. That’s why I’m entering his sweet mug in the “I Heart Faces” pet photo challenge. Because he’s one of a kind and very dearly loved.
