OKMH – The September Edition

OKMH – One Kitchen, Many Hearts

That’s what we call our little group of blogging buddies and the goody boxes we send every other month. Who are these ladies? Let me show you.

OKMH Bloggers – Mads, Kirsten & Megan; Bottom: Me, Allison & Kat

Top Left: Madelyn (Mads) of La Petite Pancake
Top Center: Kirsten of Comfortably Domestic
Top Right: Megan of Country Cleaver
Bottom Center: Allison of Decadent Philistines
Bottom Right: Kat of Tenaciously Yours

That’s our official OKMH photo collage, but it’s this informal photo that really makes me giggle. Kirsten is responsible for this treasure:

The ‘unofficial’ group photo – this is how we picture us.
Megan waving to someone on the beach cracks me up every single time.

I don’t remember how we all met, but we’ve been as thick as thieves for a few years now, and I love them more every day. We may be from every corner of the U.S., but we are one kitchen with many hearts.

This month I received a box of love from Megan, the effervescent chef behind Country Cleaver. She’s amazing. She lives in Seattle. She’s a newlywed who loves her big hunk o’ burning love Ben, her sweet yellow lab Huck, enjoys long walks on the beach, craft brewing, bread baking, salmon, and pumpkin spice Hershey’s kisses (she hoards them). If there was such an award, she would surely be named “Blogger I’d Most Like to Drink A Beer With” or even “Blogger Whose Kitchen Pantry I’d Most Like to Secretly Live In”. Or both.

Here’s what Megan sent:

For the record, we love Halloween in this house. So she nailed it. Jonah Bear & Lilly Bug are going to love this. Spiders and witches and pumpkins – oh my!

Speaking of the grandkids, Jonah is going to lose it when he sees these:

He’ll be six in December and he L-O-V-E-S all things gummy. The fact that these are kind of creepy will only enhance their attraction. Well played, Megan.

Lilly Bug, who turned three this month, will love this rubber ducky (as do I). Who needs sparkly vampires with this little cutie around? #TeamJacob

When it comes to sharing, the only person in my immediate family that loves coffee like I do is my daughter. It goes without saying that she and I will be savoring these together. Look, honey! Maple Pecan & Caramel Pumpkin!

Did you know that our Megan is an ambassador for Copper River Salmon? Yup. She just got back from a spectacular weekend in Cordova, Alaska where she saw first hand what it takes to process salmon. And because she knows I share her love of this gorgeous fish, she included this tin of salmon rub. Move over, brisket. There’s a new gill in town. (Sorry. Bad joke. Okay, I’m not sorry.)

Megan also sent two gorgeous green ceramic chili bowls so we could celebrate fall Texas-style. Unfortunately, the postal service beat the crap out of that box and both bowls were shattered. Completely demolished. But that’s bound to happen when you ship stuff as far as we do, and I SO appreciate the gesture and the love behind it. The Complete Package tried his best to glue them back together, but they were beyond repair. I started to include a photo of his “Frankenbowls” but I didn’t want to break Megan’s heart. It wasn’t pretty. Funny, perhaps, with his big gaping seams oozing with hot glue, but not pretty.

UPDATE: After much urging from The Complete Package, I’ve decided to add a photo collage of the broken chili bowls. Not because I want Megan to feel bad that they didn’t make it intact, but because of the hilarity that ensued when TCP tried to step in and save the day. Determined to “make this right”, he grabbed my hot glue gun and spent a good half hour trying to put my chili bowls back together again, Humpty Dumpty style. Reality was more in line with Megan’s Halloween theme, and so (with that in mind)… I give you the Frankenbowls.

Know what takes your mind off broken bowls? I mentioned it before, and I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw them. Megan sent a bag of her beloved Pumpkin Spice Hershey Kisses. A vision of Ben prying them out of her hands to put them into the box flashed for a split second, but then I thought, “No, that’s Megan. Always a giver.” She sent an entire bag. It couldn’t have been more significant if it had been a kidney. Okay, maybe that’s a stretch, but Megan really, really loves these pumpkin spice kisses. Like for realz, yo.

And as soon as they spend some time in the fridge firming back up, Ima dig in. And I’m going to think of her each time I enjoy one. Because (and I know she’ll gasp when she reads this) I have never… ever… had one. Ever. And that will make these even sweeter.

Oh, before I go all pumpkin kiss bliss on you – go to Mads’ website and see what I sent her. You can get there by clicking HERE. You can also click on the all blog links at the top of this post to see what everyone got in their OKMH boxes. It’s always fun to see what the girls are sending and receiving.

Now go. I’ve got candy to eat and I’m not much of a sharer around chocolate. Move along, folks. Nothing to see here.

My new favorite walking shoes

OMG. I never ever use that phrase, but O-M-G! I just fell in love with a shoe.

Skechers GO WALK shoes; photo via Amazon.com

Have you ever had that moment in a shoe store when you tried something on and said out loud, “Holy crap! Where have YOU been all my life?!?” This was it for me. I swear, I didn’t take more than 3-4 steps before I threw them back in the box and declared, “Oh, yeah. You’re coming home with me!”

Skechers GO WALK shoes; photo via Amazon.com

They’re not just comfortable, they’re big fuzzy bunny slippers kind of comfy. Walking on baby pillows kind of comfy. Dancing on big puffy marshmallows comfy. I think it’s the bouncy miracle air springs on the soles, although I’m guessing they don’t officially call them that (dibs on that trademarking gem).

Skechers GO WALK shoes; photo via Amazon.com

Another bonus – they’re super lightweight. I’m thinking they’re the perfect travel shoe; easy to slip on & off, supportive enough to run from gate to gate & leap suitcases in a single bound, and smashable enough to cram into a suitcase with almost no added weight. Mine are a soft dove gray, but they come in colors. Here’s the link: http://www.skechers.com/style/13510/skechers-gowalk/

How much do I love them? Enough that I am actively searching nearby stores for a second pair. I am not taking any chances they’ll stop making these puppies soon. I plan to stock up so I don’t have to shave my head, tear my clothes or sell my worldly possessions in protest some day. See this last picture?

Skechers GO WALK shoes; photo via Amazon.com

That’s all you’ll see of me until I find another pair (or four) – my backside. And God help you if I get to said store and you’ve got the last pair of size 10s in your hand. God. Help. You. You’d better run, girlfriend. :)

Note: This is not a paid advertisement for Skechers GO WALK shoes. They have no idea who I am other than some crazy nut-job fan of their delicious walking shoe, if they happen to read this. I was not compensated one iota for this post, but trust me when I say this – if they want to offer me some free ones? You can bet your sweet a$$ I’m taking them up on it. -NanaBread

UPDATE (Oct 2012): Several readers asked if these slip-ons started to take on that sweaty-foot stink after time. I’m here to admit that yes, after wearing them on hot summer days in Houston when my feet got sweaty, they did start to take on that weird vinegar smell those of us with stinky feet are familiar with. However, because these shoes are highly washable, it’s really not an issue. I’ve now thrown mine into the washing machine with a load of clothes three times without experiencing any shrinkage or change in the shape or color of the shoe. After washing, I let them air dry which happens quickly since the body of the shoe is a neoprene-type material. Final vote: A+. They’re still just as comfortable and look just as good as the day I bought them, and I’m still in love.

One Kitchen, Many Hearts – June

I love our blogger boxes. There’s no other way to say it. It’s like Christmas morning, every other month. For June OKMH Boxes, I received a carton of love from the 45th parallel from Kirsten of Comfortably Domestic. We’ve never met, but we are twins separated at birth (never mind the pesky age difference). She is my sister from another mister. My doppelgänger. And because of that, her box was an exercise in perfection. It started with this card.

This is us in 30 years, and my vote goes to “buck naked”

Fuel for my soul, that’s what this box is.

The first goodie out of the box was this can of chipotle peppers (which we love), a jar of lemons preserved in salt (which I have never in my life tried), and a recipe for BBQ sauce that combines the two. Kirsten nailed this one. I love lemons, we both love barbecue, and TCP loves to grill. I can’t wait to try this recipe and those gorgeous salt-preserved lemons.

Smokey, zingy, tasty goodness – all in one recipe. Very cool.

Next up, a little something for the girly girl in me. Hello summer!

Lips & nails – throw in some mascara & it’s a girly emergency kit.

Then my heart stopped beating when I found these…

Dried cherries from the Upper Peninsula region of the 45th parallel.

If you’re thinking “big deal… dried cherries” then I question how we can be friends (except for my dear friend Kaki – she gets a cherry pass). Seriously, as a cherry lover there are few things as glorious as a gift of Michigan cherries. Canned, fresh or dried – I’ll take them any way I can get them. I’m not exaggerating when I say that a little tear of joy came to my eye when I pulled these out of the box. They are the perfect blend of tart & sweet, dried & plump. I covet these the way some girls covet diamonds. Have mercy, they’re delicious.

This next little gadget blew my mind.

The Cuppow – it turns any wide-mouth canning jar into a travel mug.

As a lover of canning jars AND my morning coffee, my jaw dropped when I saw this. The Cuppow fits onto any wide-mouth canning jar, which I just happen to have a love affair with. In the list of things I hoard, canning jars rank near the top. When I saw this, I did the head slap/why didn’t I think of this thing. It’s so simple it’s brilliant. And Kirsten kicked it up another notch by including my first ‘to go’ beverage AND a handmade travel jar koozie. Seriously. She raises 4 boys, homeschools them all, runs a household, trains a dog and bakes every single day. And she still found time to knit a cover for my travel jar. UH.MAZE.ING.

This simple rigid plastic lid will change you life.

Knowing my love of canning jars, Kirsten capped my June box with yet another of my obsessions – buttons. Or in this case, buttons in an antique canning jar she found in an antique shop. My mother and I went through these like kids in a candy shop, ‘ooooing’ and ‘ahhhhing’ over each new find. We laughed our butts off when we found a small denture charm in the jar. It looks ancient, it’s a little disturbing, and it’s absolutely hysterical. I loved them all. Here’s a collage tribute to our button fun because every crafty girl loves buttons.

Antique buttons in an antique jar; she just gets me

Saying that I enjoyed this month’s box would be a gross understatement. I loved it all. Kirsten’s picks could not have been more perfect. Seriously, these boxes are too much fun. I have a feeling we’re going to need to expand this next year to include more friends. Because everyone loves friends and presents.

My favorite wallpaper

A close-up of the Mucha stained glass window at St Vitus Cathedral

When I say wallpaper, I don’t mean wallpaper wallpaper. As in not on the walls of my home. This photo is the wallpaper or backdrop on my laptop. Many times a day I gaze at this photograph and still I can’t seem grasp all the glorious detail and exquisite color. I took this photo last fall on our trip to the Netherlands, Istanbul & Prague. This is the famous Mucha window in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, Czech Republic. It was designed by Alphonse Mucha, whom I personally believe to be one of the greatest Art Nouveau masters of all time.

Note: to see the photos in a larger format, simply click on the photo. When you’re done, hit the ‘back’ arrow on your computer to return to this post.

Here is the window in its entirety:

A full view of Mucha’s glorious tribute to Prague’s Jubilee

Simply stunning. Until our trip to Prague, the stained glass windows at St. Chapelle in Paris were my personal favorite. But now? I just can’t stop looking at this window. No matter how many times I see it, I can’t get enough.

The detail and color in each panel is simply stunning.

Are you a stained glass lover? Do you find yourself planning visits to old churches when you travel just to see the gorgeous art? Because if you don’t, you’re missing some of the finest historical masterpieces the world has to offer. If you have any favorites, please share them in the comment section. I’d love to see what inspires you and perhaps add a few new destinations to my bucket list.

Houston 2012 Art Car Parade

The Complete Package and I attended our first Houston Art Car Parade this weekend. What a hoot! Over 300 cars entered this year’s parade; each one of them unique and entertaining. Here’s a look at this year’s event, starting with Houston’s mayor. Note: You can click on any photo to see it in a larger format, then simply hit the ‘back arrow’ on your computer to return to the blog.

And to prove that it’s not just about the cars, here’s a tribute to my favorite “accessory” of the day. Caution – you may not be able to handle all this sexy.

To the funny & friendly lady who sat behind us at the parade ogling the Viking Skater man (I believe her name was Lynn) – that one was for you. {wink}

One Kitchen Many Hearts – Round 2

Remember back in February when a group of my blogging friends and I started a box exchange program? Well, it’s that time again and I’m so excited to share what I got from my friend Madelyn of La Petite Pancake blog from the sunny state of California. The great thing about exchanging gift boxes with friends is that we all seem to get each other. There’s no awkward moment of ‘what should I send’ or ‘I wonder if she’ll like this?’ We’ve known each other for over a year now, and it’s starting to show. Perfect case in point:

A box of love from Madelyn in California

It’s a margarita and mojito party in a box. Yup. She totally gets me.

Spring = Cocktails. I like the way she thinks.

This arts & crafts disclaimer cracks me up.

We’ve been tossing around the idea of building a blogger compound with cute cabins for all our families, a huge kitchen, and a dining barn so we can all cook and eat together. Plans also include a fire pit for Peep S’mores, a full bar, activities for the kids, and perhaps a craft room; keeping in mind, of course, that we can’t all be Martha Stewart. We’re just waiting for one of us to hit it big on Power Ball. Remember ladies… you (we) can’t win if you (we) don’t play.

Mads really did think of everything.

Cocktail Book – check. Cute Napkins – check. Recipes – check. Citrus Reamer & Cocktail Stirrer – check. All I need to do now is grab a bottle of hooch from the pantry, and this party is ON! Wanna come over?

The perfect margarita? Only one way to find out!

Mads knows I’m a margarita girl. She also knows I love a challenge. Looks like I’ll need to mix up several glasses of “research” to test this recipe. It’ll be like America’s Test Kitchen – if they were all standing around the kitchen swilling hooch instead of scientifically disecting recipes for the perfect meatloaf. (Between us, Chris Kimball could use a cocktail. I’ll bet Julia Davison parties like a rock star. Anyone who loves bacon like that knows how to have fun.)

101 Mojitos. 365 days in a year. I'd better get busy.

Remember Cake Week? Cookie Week? Salad Week? Well, there’s chatter going around that we might need to host a Cocktail Week, so this book is sure to come in handy. So much research, so little time. As I said, I love a challenge!

So there you have it – another great gift box from our One Kitchen Many Hearts project. Thank you, Madelyn! Thanks for the box of awesome. Thanks for contributing to the delinquency of a grandmother. And thank you most of all for being my friend.

OXO Scale is a Must / Recipe is a Bust

Update: The giveaway featured in this blog is now closed. Congratulations to Allison from Arizona. It’s time to break out that Bavarian magazine you mentioned. I’d love it if you’d let me know what you make first with your new OXO Five Pound Food Scale… once you finish weighing everything you own just for fun. Congrats & happy weighing! -NB

When it comes to finding new recipes on the internet, I have this little problem. Some of the recipes that catch my attention are published in weight, not measurement. Ounces, not cups. Grams, not ounces. This poses a dilemma for me. I have no scale. I could just find a website that would do the conversion, but that could take a while. And I could just learn to do the math in my head, but that would take even longer. I was never very good at math. I helped My Baby with her 6th grade math homework years ago when The Complete Package was out of town on a business trip. She got an F. It’s a sad tale, but it’s true.

Fresh outta' the box & ready to roll - the OXO 5-Pound Food Scale

Enter the OXO 5-Pound Food Scale, part of OXO’s Healthy Eating Tools collection. Or as I call it – the scale that launched a thousand recipes. My key to unlocking weight-based recipes from around the world. The scale that converts US to metric, ounces to grams, with the touch of a button. Literally. As a brand new member of the OXO Blogger Outreach Program, OXO generously offered to send me their digital food scale. I immediately jumped for joy and here’s why:

1. the product is sent at no cost to the blogger
2. the blogger agrees to try the product at home
3. the blogger agrees to give their HONEST opinion
4. the blogger gets to keep the product, again at no cost
5. the blogger fully discloses participation in the program
6. the company provides a second unit for one lucky reader
7. there are no downsides to this program; not one!

To take this puppy out for a spin, I intentionally went back to my favorite recipe site, Tasty Kitchen, and dug up one of the recipes I shelved due to odd measurements. One that was so specifically strange it made my head spin. The recipe was for a plum cake. Since I had fresh strawberries and a new batch of homemade strawberry jam, I decided to go that route instead. It started with butter. I bake in tablespoons of butter, or sticks and half-sticks. This one called for 5 3/8 ounces of butter. Seriously. Five and 3/8 ounces. Can you grab a stick of butter and measure that without scratching your head? I can’t.

I started with one stick of butter. As you can clearly see, one stick equals 4 1/8 ounces. So I cut a little off of another stick and added it to the scale.

Presto. 5 3/8 ounces of butter at your service. Next up, sugar. I place a glass on the scale. A glass that evidently weighs 5 3/4 ounces.

No problem. Just hit the ‘zero’ button to the right of the display, and the scale resets to cancel out the weight of the container. Love that.

With the scale zeroed out, I was free to measure the required 6 ounces of sugar.

Six ounces on the button. No leveling. No guessing. Just straight up six ounces. You may be thinking, “Hold up, NanaBread. What’s with the battery symbol to the right of the 6?” That’s not a battery indicator, my friends. Let me show you.

That indicator shows the maximum range of the five pound scale. As you continue to add ingredients to your bowl, the indicator shows you how close you’re getting to the maximum limit of five pounds. Pretty convenient.

Next up was flour, so I switched to a bigger bowl. I also used a heavy bowl so I could see how the scale would react. This ceramic bowl weighs one pound, 10 ounces and change. Before adding the flour, I hit the ‘zero’ button again.

Did you notice that? The scale is reset to zero so my flour measurement is accurate, but the 5-pound scale on the right still shows the total weight so I can tell when I’m getting close to five pounds. The scale keeps track for you.

I love that I can just grab my flour canister and start dumping flour into the bowl now. No measuring cups, no concern over whether I should shake it or scrape it to level the cup. I can just dump it in until the scale hits the magic number.

Fourteen and 1/8th ounces. See what I mean about just how specific this recipe was? I’m not kidding. It said to add 14 and 1/8th ounces of flour. So I did. What I ended up with is a thick batter that looked more like cookie dough than cake batter. It tasted like cookie dough, too. Yes, I eat raw cookie dough. Don’t you?

I pressed it into a 9″x9″ square pan lined with parchment and started adding fruit. Instead of plums, I used ten ounces of fresh berries and half a pint of jam.

The strawberries were washed, hulled and chopped and scattered over the top.

The jam was spooned over the berries. Such a pretty shade of red.

Next, a crumb topping was applied about 1/2″ thick over the entire cake.

The cake was baked at 350F for about 35 minutes, until it was golden brown.

Breakfast or dessert? What would NanaBread do? She’d go with ice cream.

Now here’s a dirty little secret about food blogging. As good as this cake looked, it was as dry as sand. So dry, I think I’m calling this The Sahara Dessert. Not even ice cream could re-hydrate it. It looks fabulous, but it was almost inedible. How bad was it? The Complete Package thought that maybe we could buy a poultry injector and pump it full of vanilla pudding to moisten it up. Seriously. You know a recipe failed when the solution involves a poultry injection kit.

For all the detail in measurements, this recipe goes in the Fail Log. The most surprising part of the failure was that I added 2 ounces of orange juice that wasn’t even called for and STILL it was dry. From the berries up, it was lovely. That’s hardly a ringing endorsement. But at least I came out of this knowing that it wasn’t due to my lack of diligence in following the recipe. By golly, it called for 14 1/8 ounces, and it got it. Sometimes recipes just don’t work.

This recipe may have tanked, but the OXO scale was right on the money. I would never have attempted such a fussy recipe without it. Which is where my ray of hope springs eternal, and my new OXO scale becomes my saving grace. A few months ago, I grabbed this book off the clearance rack at a bookstore.

I was so excited. Baking is my therapy of choice. In all honesty, I gave it a quick flip-through on the way to the register, just glancing quickly at photos like this.

If you know me, you’ll understand why I couldn’t resist. I have a thing for cherries. When I got home, I sat down to peruse my $3 gem and noticed this:

Grams and ounces. Crap. Every recipe in the book is formatted just like this one. See where I’m going with this? Now that I have a new OXO food scale, I can finally tackle my baking book without reservation. A whole new collection of fabulous baked goods just opened up for me. And now it can for you, too.

OXO has generously provided a second OXO Five Pound Food Scale for one lucky reader. All you have to do is leave a comment, and this little lightweight beauty could be yours. If you’re like me, you’ll be weighing everything in your kitchen or pantry just so you can play with it. Things like this:

That’s not a tiny scale, it’s a huge tomato. And this:

Yes, it’s an orange the size of a grapefruit. This is Texas. And even this:

Yes, that’s my Pioneer Woman Cookbook. But wait! I can’t see how much Ree weighs! (Don’t you know she’d have a nervous breakdown if she heard we were weighing her on the internet?) It’s okay, Ree. It’s just the cookbook. But here’s the kicker – the OXO Five Pound Food Scale has one hidden feature I haven’t shown you yet. Are you ready for this?

The digital display pulls out so you can still read it, even when using larger bowls, platters or cookbooks. Can you believe it? I’m telling you, OXO really did think of everything. It’s why I own an entire collection of their products, all of which (with the exception of this scale) I have gladly paid for. Their stuff rocks.

When you’re done, just slide the display back in the dock and two small magnets lock it into place. A quick swipe of a Clorox wipe, and it’s ready to store.

This scale is extremely lightweight at 16 ounces and has a slim profile, so you can easily store it anywhere. Mine is resting to top of my spice bin. And because it runs on two AAA batteries (included), you can literally use it anywhere. The Complete Package has already used it to weigh envelopes so he no longer has to guess how many stamps to use. Fabulous!

Now leave a comment and tell me what recipe you’d tackle first if you had an OXO Five Pound Food Scale of your very own. If it’s one you found on the internet, feel free to share the hyperlink so we can see what inspires you. Participants must be residents of the United States due to shipping concerns. One name will be drawn at random at 12:00 Noon CST next Sunday, April 29th, 2012. That person will be notified by e-mail and will have 24 hours to respond before another name is chosen. Once a winner is confirmed, I’ll update this post.

As stated before, both scales were provided by the OXO Bloggers Outreach Program absolutely free of charge. The scale offered in this giveaway is identical to the one reviewed. OXO even included a shipping label for the winner. All they asked in return was my honest opinion, which I provided.

Now it’s time for you to weigh in. Good luck!

It’s 85F in Houston this week. Must be time to break out the flip-flops!

It’s always warm in deep south Texas, which explains why we are a flip-flop culture. All across the ‘Southern Coast’ casual flip-flops are our footwear of choice, especially in the summer when temperatures top 100 degrees. I can’t speak for everyone, but my clan likes them cute and cheap. If we can score a nifty pair for under $15, we’re as happy as clams. It also helps us justify having a closet FULL of them. I’m not joking when I confess that I usually have at least a dozen pair of flip-flops in various closets at any given time. I have them stacked in my bedroom closet. I keep them in the coat closet downstairs so I can throw them on for a trip to the grocery store. I stash a pair in the little niche in my kitchen so I can run out and grab the mail each afternoon. And it’s not just me. Most of my friends and family collect them the same way we collect nail polish, sunglasses and souvenir t-shirts.

Imagine my surprise when I received a pair of flip-flops from my dear friend Kirsten from Michigan. Her BFF Jennifer started a company making flip-flops from recycled blue jeans and she convinced her to send me a pair. How cool is that? As much as I love the shoes, I also love the story behind them. Jeans Gone Green creates unique flip-flops made from blue jeans that go unsold at thrift and resale shops. After the unwanted jeans are collected, they’re turned over to Grand Traverse Industries in Traverse City, Michigan, who in turn provides jobs for those with special needs or limited job opportunities. Their employees cut and prepare the denim for a team of artisans and seamstresses who design and create one-of-a-kind footwear. And we’re not talking about plain cheapo flip-flops, folks. We’re talking high-end footwear embellished with Swarovski crystals. No kidding. These are not my run-of-the-mill sporting goods store flip-flops. These are by far the swankiest flip-flops I’ve ever possessed.

Another nice touch is the packaging. No clunky cardboard shoe boxes here! Jeans Gone Green packages their footwear in handmade denim bags made from portions of the jeans not used in their shoes. The long, narrow shape makes the bags a perfect size for reusing as wine bottle totes, a e-reader bag, or a beach bag for a rolled towel, a tube of sunscreen and a bottle of water. When they say they recycle old denim, they really mean it. I just love that.

As a bonus, the owner (Jennifer) offered to set up a discount code for readers of this blog. If you’re in the mood to treat yourself, visit the Jeans Gone Green website and use the internet promo code NANABREAD to receive a discount. This offer is only good for purchases made on their website, not in stores. And speaking of stores, the company is rapidly expanding, including into stores across Texas. Don’t forget to look for them in a boutique near you. For your convenience, they have a “Where to Buy” link on their website, but if you can’t find them in your favorite shop, ask for them! They’re partnering with new shops all the time. Here’s the scoop on the company:

Special thanks to my friend Kirsten at Comfortably Domestic and Jennifer of Jeans Gone Green. What a wonderful surprise, ladies. Thanks so much!

Note: This post was written of my own volition. I was not in any way solicited, compensated, or reimbursed to promote Jeans Gone Green and/or their footwear. These were simply a gift from a friend. I am sharing them with you because I loved them and thought you might, too. Furthermore, I will in NO WAY be compensated or reimbursed for any purchases made using the NANABREAD discount code. That has been offered by the owner of the company as an unsolicited gift to readers of this blog. You are in no way obligated to make a purchase. If you do, it may help to note that mine ran a little small, so you may wish to order a size larger than you normally wear.

Hi, My Name is NanaBread and I am a Peppermint Bath Product Junkie (The Re-run Edition)

I don’t usually re-run posts, but this morning I took a shower with some of my favorite bath products and it reminded me of this old post from September 2010. So if you missed this one or if you’re just into post-holiday confessions, here is one of my favorite old posts highlighting some of my favorite things and my burgeoning addiction to all things peppermint. Enjoy!

Is there a 12-step program for bath product addiction? There should be. I have a serious problem when it comes to peppermint scented bath products – I spend too much money on them. It’s a love that apparently knows no boundary. I’ve tried to control it, but I can’t. I’m weak and I know it, but I smell good.

A Peek Into My Minty Addiction - Peppermint Bath Products

Let’s literally start at the top with Nioxin’s Scalp Therapy. I picked this up at my hair salon on a whim and never regretted anything but the cost. I’ll be honest. I don’t use it every day because I just can’t wrap my head around using a $40 shampoo and conditioner twin-pack on a daily basis, but I do use it once a week or so (as a special treat). It’s especially refreshing in the summer after a hot sweaty morning pulling weeds in the flower beds. I don’t buy it often, but I love and appreciate it when I do. It’s lovely, and I hope you win the lottery some day so you can afford to make it part of your daily routine.

I was in San Francisco when I stumbled into an Origins store with bloody swollen feet crying for help or for someone to put me out of my misery. That’s what happens when you wear the wrong shoes to sightsee in San Francisco. (Travel hint: don’t wear brand new leather wedges if you’re walking the streets of San Francisco. Wear running shoes and put a pair of bunny slippers in your purse. Wear the running shoes when you’re in motion and the bunny slippers when you give up and stop for a margarita.) Origins saved my feet and my trip. I bought the 4-piece leg & foot rejuvenation package. I love their clever product names: Foot Rest, Sole Searcher, Leg Lifts and Reinventing the Heel. Don’t let their humor fool you. These beauties are seriously fabulous and effective. Thank you, Origins. Because of you, I was able to leave my heart in San Francisco instead of pieces of my wrecked feet.

My longest lasting peppermint crush (by far) has been the Oatmeal Peppermint bath bar from Garden Botanika. Oh, my…I have loved it for so long. If I had a dollar for every six dollar bar I’ve bought, I’d still be in the hole, but I’d be a happy camper. I love this soap more than life itself. Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but I do love it fiercely. The oatmeal chunks set in a creamy peppermint bar will cleanse and exfoliate you like Helga the Baltic spa technician. I’ll warn you – you will look like you lost a cat fight when you first step out of the shower, but your skin will feel as soft as a baby’s backside.

J.R. Watkins Apothecary Peppermint Rejuvenating Foot Cream is my new lotion obsession. It’s labeled as a foot cream but it’s much, much more than that. Because it’s gentle and absorbs very quickly, I use it everywhere – even on my face. That’s saying a lot, because I have sensitive skin and mild rosacea. I can use this product without any fear of breakouts or that greasy feeling you get from some lotions. I put it on and a minute later, my skin feels smooth and dry. I am in love with this lotion. I will even go so far as to say that it has helped reduce the wrinkles on my face and neck over the past year. I put it on every morning before I apply my make-up and every evening before I go to bed. About the only place I don’t use it is on my feet. Go figure.

You’re probably thinking right now “geez…how many peppermint products can one woman use?” But wait! There’s more! My daughter introduced me to the most amazing liquid soap on a shopping trip to Austin’s SoCo district. We were snooping around the Farm to Market Organic Grocery on South Congress when she handed me a bottle of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Peppermint Pure-Castile Soap (certified organic and fair trade). She said it would blow my mind, and it did. For serious peppermint junkies, this is the hard stuff. It is a peppermint explosion in a bottle. Combined with a nice bath scrubbing poof, this will make your heart sing and your body parts tingle. I like to use it first thing in the morning when I need a shower to wake me up, or after an hour in the garage wrestling with my jiggly parts on the elliptical machine. Imagine jumping into a frozen pond. That’s how refreshing I find this soap. And it makes my entire bathroom and bedroom smell pepperminty fresh for half an hour after I shower. Here’s another secret: I use their almond scented soap at night when I want to unwind and smell good. And believe me, it smells really, really good.

Last but not least, I love the Savannah Bee Company’s Mint Julep Beeswax Lip Balm. You can buy it in a tube or in a little metal tin. While I usually favor lip balm tubes, my daughter found a great deal on E-Bay and we split the cost of a 12-pack of the cute little metal tins. I’ll be honest. She had me at beeswax. When they added Mint Julep, I was sunk. This all-natural lip balm is everything you want in a lip balm. It’s creamy, it’s long-lasting, and its peppermint oil content leaves your lips feeling quenched and refreshed. The Complete Package will testify that I am a lip balm addict. I carry 3-4 brands (a quick nod to Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm here – watermelon is my color). I carry it at all times. I use it every 15 minutes. I can’t stop. On the up side, my lips are always lush and kissable at a moment’s notice (the better to kiss you with, my dear!). I know my excessive use of peppermint lip balm is a problem because my (now 5) year-old grandson, Jonah, will now turn to me in the car and say, “can I get some of that?” I’m sorry, Jonah Bear. Nana didn’t mean to start you down the road to peppermint product addiction at such an early age. She should know better. But now that I have your attention, have you seen this peppermint lotion I got? AARRGHHH! Somebody stop me!

Whoa, Santa! You kind of outdid yourself there. Way to go, big guy!

I knew I was good this year, but I had no idea I was this good. Either Santa was feeling generous, or he totally came to the wrong house. Either way, I’m claiming the ‘no take-backs’ rule and also the ‘I touched it last’ rule. So if this set-up was supposed to go to my neighbor instead, tough shitsky. Sorry; that was harsh. I should work on being nicer to others in 2012. But I’m still not giving it back.

Here’s what Santa done brung me:

1. Cuisinart Single Serve Coffee Brewer – it’s way cool, and it’s shiny. I love shiny. It has a huge water reservoir with a built-in filter to purify our softener-laden tap water AND it makes coffee, tea or hot cocoa one cup at a time, which means I can stop pouring leftover coffee down the sink every morning. See honey, I’m already saving you money!

2. Nespresso Aerocinno 3 Milk Frother – you heard me; it’s a milk frother. It heats milk and then whips it with a tiny beater to create that glossy, peaked foam you get at fancy coffee houses. And when I say ‘beats it to a frothy peak’, I mean it takes my cold 2% milk and turns it into piping hot milk with a head on it like whipped meringue. Talk about putting frosting on a cupcake! This baby is a keeper. Now I have to learn to make shamrocks and leaves and other fancy shapes in the top of my coffee (or not).

3. Starbucks City Collection Cups – this is a gift I give myself. It started years ago with a trip to Seattle and a visit to the ‘original’ Starbucks at Pike Place Market. Since then, I have collected these giant coffee mugs from cities around the world – Stuttgart, Istanbul, Prague, Amsterdam, etc. I love them. They’re a colorful way to reminisce about great trips over a morning cuppa joe. And did I mention they’re huge? Yeah… make mine a double.

4. K-Cup Rack and the cups to fill it – Santa was kind enough to provide a thoughtful variety of K-cups to kick-start my addiction. There’s Donut Shop Decaf for late nights and Tully’s French Roast for those mornings when I need a kick in the seat to get me moving. There is also a baker’s dozen of assorted other coffee flavors from a sampler box, as well as a supply of dark chocolate hot cocoa and some Twinings English Breakfast tea. Santa knows me well.

So I guess this wasn’t meant for my neighbor after all. Maybe I really WAS a good girl this year. That’s a relief. But then, that means I owe someone a BIG thank you. Lord help me; I hope that doesn’t mean what I think it means {wink}.
