Sometimes I just have random thoughts to share. Topics may vary, depending on my ever-changing mood. The views of this blogger may not reflect your own, so please be tolerant or exercise your sense of humor while reading. I have been known to use sarcasm enthusiastically.

My deal of the week OR How I bought a great purse so cheap it felt like I stole it OR God bless Macy’s. You pick.

I went to Macy’s last Thursday to find some shoes. Comfortable walking shoes, that’s what I was looking for. Something to wear on vacation when you’re planning to walk for hours on end. Something I could slip on and off easily so I wouldn’t get cursed at in the security line at the airport. You know what I mean. You’ve been there. If you didn’t curse out loud, you totally did it in your head. Hopefully. So anyway, I walked into Macy’s with my mind set on walking shoes that didn’t look like something a nurse would wear for long shift work and I got lucky. I found a pair I liked that fit. Sounds easy, but really it’s not for me. You see, I wear a size 10 double narrow. Yeah, wrap your head around that for a second. Not one to just buy one thing and walk out when I’m all alone with time to kill, I handed my super cute, uber comfortable vacation shoes to the cashier and had her hold them while I perused the purse department.

Now I may or may not have mentioned that I have a handbag addiction, which is funny because I usually carry a small purse at all times. The same small, cross-body bag… all the time. It’s a Baggallini. I have their Everyday Bag in tan with a light blue lining, and it’s awesome. But as I was saying, I still find myself drawn to purses. Is it a genetic thing? I wonder. Are girls programmed to love purses? Am I betraying my gender by even asking that question? If it’s not genetic, then it is most likely a virus I picked up – probably from touching a shopping cart at the grocery store. PS – thank you, Store Managers, for putting sanitizing wipes next to the grocery carts. I love you for that. I really do.

But I digress. Here is my find of the week from Macy’s:

It's actually a nice olive green. I promise.

It’s big. It’s a great shade of olive green, and it has all kinds of fabulous pockets and zippered hidey holes. The color in this photo washed out. I tried to fix it so it would look more realistic, but it just made the ivory door in the background look orange. Here’s a photo of the back of the purse, for purse-o-files:

The back side. Ha! I said backside.

The color is a little more true-to-life in this photo, but it’s still a little washed out. I probably should have taken it outside to photograph it, but that would just make my neighbors wonder why I was standing on my lawn snapping pics of a purse. Most of them don’t know I blog, and I like that. Makes me feel stealthy. Mysterious. Anonymous. I could say anything about them, and they wouldn’t know it was me. But I wouldn’t, because I have a hard and fast rule that I never put anyone’s photo or real name in my blog without their permission. Sometimes, it’s just hard being good.

Right now, you’re probably thinking, “Wow. She really needs to put down the Dr Pepper” and I would but I already finished it and threw the can in the recycling bin. It was tasty. I had it with a gyro combination plate at my local Mediterranean grocer today at lunch. Drank it straight out of the can with a straw, because I’m that girl who thanks store managers for putting sanitizing wipes next to shopping carts. I also sourced some garbanzos, haloumi cheese, pita bread and some Syrian yogurt, but I’ll save that for another post. Here’s a hint: it starts with chicken and ends with shawarma. I know, right?!

But let’s wrap up this purse story first, shall we? I saw it hanging in the purse department at Macy’s and I instantly loved it. One look at the price tag, and I knew it could be mine. Originally priced at $85, it had been marked down to $45, and then down to $25. Now, I can’t speak for anyone else, but when I see an $85 designer purse (even if I’ve never heard of Giani Bernini) marked down to $25, I’m thinking “I could do this.” I walked away once and thought it over as I browsed, but then circled back like a shark and grabbed it. I had to. The power of Macy’s compelled me. C’mon… just look at how much space is in this bag!

This purse is gonna make me lose my mind... up in here, up in here

So jump ahead now to me at the cash register, reclaiming my cute walking shoes and handing over my new olive green purse for payment. Cue the angel music, because when she rang up the purse, it came up as $20. That’s right… my sale purse was on sale! My $25 dollar formerly $85 dollar purse was on sale for 20% off. Shut the front door! All I can say is “Thank you, God in heaven for Macy’s clearance sales.” Well, that and “And I’ll try to be good from now on” because it never hurts to throw that in. Notice I said try. My momma didn’t raise no fool.

One of my favorite songs (from 1975)

Since I’m on a 70’s jag with my David Cassidy hair, I thought I’d share another classic – one of my favorite songs from The Seventies. I was 12 when it was released in 1975, so of course most of the lyrics didn’t hit home back then. It wasn’t until I became an adult that I truly came to appreciate the touching words of Janis Ian in “At Seventeen”. It’s heartbreaking and haunting, and yet wonderful at the same time. I heard this song on the radio last week. Yes, it was an oldies station, but I’m so glad I tuned in. Here’s your chance to walk down memory lane, if you’re of the proper age. It’s okay to sing along if you know the tune. I’ll be here singing it with you. I promise.

“AT SEVENTEEN”

By Janis Ian

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired
The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth…

And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say “come dance with me”
And murmured vague obscenities
It isn’t all it seems at seventeen…

A brown-eyed girl in hand me downs
Whose name I never could pronounce
Said: “Pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve”
The rich relationed hometown queen
Marries into what she needs
With a guarantee of company
And haven for the elderly…

So remember those who win the game
Lose the love they sought to gain
In debitures of quality and dubious integrity
Their small-town eyes will gape at you
In dull surprise when payment due
Exceeds accounts received at seventeen…

To those of us who knew the pain
Of valentines that never came
And those whose names were never called
When choosing sides for basketball
It was long ago and far away
the world was younger than today
when dreams were all they gave for free
to ugly duckling girls like me…

We all play the game, and when we dare
We cheat ourselves at solitaire
Inventing lovers on the phone
Repenting other lives unknown
That call and say: “Come on, dance with me”
And murmur vague obscenities
At ugly girls like me, at seventeen…

Thank you, Janis Ian. Thank you very much.

If you want to hear it straight from Janis Ian’s lips, this video on You Tube was filmed in 1976. If you haven’t listened to this song, you should. It’s really lovely.

It’s a big, hairy deal… to me, anyway.

This is what my hair currently looks like:

'Scuze me, David Cassidy. I seem to have stolen your hair.

Was it my intent to grow my hair out like a 70’s pop icon? No, it was not.
Do I want a “shag”? No, I do not. Am I happy about this? No, I am not.

This is what I’d like my hair to look like:

'Scuze me, Meg Ryan. May I steal your hair?

I don’t need the blonde part or the dark roots, but I would like to replicate this hairstyle, if that’s not asking too much. I wouldn’t mind having her figure, either. Early Meg Ryan was pretty hot.

Here’s my problem in a nutshell:

1. It’s been at least 2 months since my last haircut.

2. It was not my intention to wait 2 months between haircuts.

3. My hairdresser seems to be missing-in-action.

4. When I call my salon and they do set an appointment, she cancels.

5. 95% of the time, when I call they say she’s out sick or not coming in.

6. If she has quit or moved to a new salon, they should just tell me.

7. I’m way too nervous to try someone else out of the blue.

8. I should just suck it up and try someone new.

9. Is anyone else wondering why it costs $75 to cut short hair?

10. I’m starting to look like 1970’s-era David Cassidy.

PS – Yes, he was hot… but I don’t want to look like him.

PPS – Does anyone have a Flowbee I can borrow?

PPPS – To Marci the Hairdresser: If you’re wanted by authorities, please turn yourself in. They will go much easier on you than I will if I find you first.

Pineapple Update: Day 75

Ahhh...my baby pineapple is a young lady now!

It’s time for another pineapple update! Day 75 brought a big maintenance issue to light. As you can see from the photos below, the three shoots that sprouted from the bottom of our pineapple are really starting to crowd the fruit.

Front & back shots of new shoots crowding the fruit

Those three new shoots were getting so large the pineapple fruit had no room to grow. After consulting my favorite Hawaiian Ag site, I cut off the three shoots and replanted them. Fingers are crossed that these will indeed sprout and create new pineapple plants. That’s what the agriculture site promised, and that’s what I’m holding them to. If they root like they should, we will now have FIVE (5) baby pineapple plants. Move over, Mr. Dole…there’s a new pineapple plantation in town! Except that we have no land outside our yard, no employees, and no access to the Pacific trade winds. Oh, well. You can’t win them all!

“NanaBread’s Head” Turns One Today

July 1st marks the one year birthday of my NanaBread blog. Can you believe it? Neither can I. While time seemed to fly by, it feels like we packed a lot into this first year. Favorite recipes, photos of the family, Ziggy’s adventures in… well, snoring. We even started highlighting some of the culinary creations of The Complete Package, my beloved husband. We’ve also seen the grandkids grow at an alarming rate, shared Hoegarden stories about our “ladies only” family weekends, thrown in a few crafts, and shared some of our travel pics. We’ve highlighted local products, spotlighted some of our favorite barbecue joints, and sprinkled in some of the things I love. I think this first year definitely lived up to my blog header in that it truly is a lot like my junk drawers. It’s happily filled with random tidbits, trash and treasures. Mission accomplished.

Overall, it has been a great year, and I couldn’t have done it without you. In fact, you are the reason I’m still here. Your comments and support are what keep this blog (and me) going, and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I really do. I appreciate each visitor and value every comment, but those of you who return again and again are more than readers, you’re friends. And that is the gift I most value from my first year of blogging. You. Without you and my family, there would be no Inside NanaBread’s Head. I keep writing because you keep reading. I don’t always understand why, but I’m so happy that you do!

Here is a look back at a few of my favorite posts. Click on any title to see the full post and take a walk down memory lane.

My name is NanaBread and I’m a Peppermint Bath Product Junkie.
In this post, I got a chance to bare my soul and share my addiction – peppermint bath products. I’m not proud that I’m an addict, but if you’re going to get hooked on something, I suppose this one’s pretty harmless. Not cheap, but harmless. And it answered the burning question “Is there such a thing as too many peppermint bath products?” with a resounding “You’re joking, right?”

Menopause, you hateful bitch…
This post still makes me laugh. I was suffering from a particularly raging hot flash when I sat down and let it rip. I don’t rage often, but I let it fly with this one. I felt like life had lied to me by omission, and I didn’t want another woman to be taken by surprise ever again. This one was for the ladies, especially those in the inescapable grip of “the change” like me. It also confirmed for me that if menopause had a rubber wristband, it should be black like my mood swings.

Hidden Treasure Cupcakes: Mocha Fudge Cupcakes with Reese’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups Inside
Of all the recipes I’ve posted, this is the one I personally enjoyed the most. I’ve never had an experimental recipe come out of the oven and make my eyes roll back in my head like this one did. Deep down in my soul, I’m a pie girl. But these cupcakes almost converted me. Dark chocolate, coffee and peanut butter? Seriously – it is probably the closest I’ll ever come to cupcake perfection.

Playing With Food: Big Sister’s Rainbow Tie-Dyed Cupcakes

Speaking of cupcakes, the prettiest cupcakes of the year (by far) were my Big Sister’s rainbow tie-dyed beauties. These were inspired by a food blogger I love, but Big Sis put her own spin on it by using one of our mother’s old white cake recipes and a frosting recipe she found on the Tasty Kitchen website. She brought all those elements together to make not only a gorgeous cupcake, but a tasty one. The great thing about this recipe is that it’s adaptable. You can substitute any white cake recipe or mix, and you could use any frosting recipe. But honestly, the one Big Sis found was awesome. For pure fun and beauty, these rocked my world and made me think outside the (cake) box.

Vacation Photos of Amsterdam: Let’s just say it was…interesting.
Of all the stories I’ve shared, this one continues to get regular weekly hits months after it was posted. Evidently, Amsterdam is a highly searched travel topic. Who knew? Maybe it’s the cheese; maybe it’s the weed; maybe it’s the waffles. It truly is a “whatever floats your boat” city. It was a great trip and an interesting place, and months after it was posted this story is still going strong.

“Buy Local” Spotlight: Salt Lick BBQ
This post will always be special to me because it was the first time one of my stories was selected as a FoodPress feature. It got attention from around the world, which seemed to open my blog up to an expanded global view. I received comments from exotic locales, and gained a few subscribers from far away places who visited and decided to stick around. For that, I am eternally grateful. It left me wondering if good BBQ might be one of the keys to world peace.

In Honor of Mother’s Day
This was by far my most read post of the year thanks to a feature on the WordPress “Freshly Pressed” homepage. I don’t know how they select stories to feature, but I was blown away that this one garnered their attention. It was highlighted on the Friday before Mother’s Day and left up the entire weekend. Because of that, it got over 8,000 hits in 3 days. Some bloggers hope that their blogs will hit the big time, but in all honesty this one made me a nervous wreck. That kind of attention brought a lot of spam and more than a little anxiety, but it also provided an opportunity for others from around the world to share memories of their mothers and siblings, or lack thereof. It was both an emotional and enlightening experience for me. It also provided my mother with more than 15 minutes of fame, which was fun for her. She deserved it.

In honor of my first blogging birthday, I’m extending the celebration to one lucky reader. That reader, selected randomly, will receive a gift box containing some of my favorite things from my first year. Gift box items include:

1 bottle of Nielsen-Massey pure vanilla bean paste
1 jar of Dickinson’s Black Raspberry preserves
1 jar of Salt Lick BBQ spice rub, not pictured
1 set of small Nordic Ware spatulas
1 set of colorful measuring spoons
1 set of colorful measuring cups
1 set of Le Creuset silicone measuring prep bowls
1 bar of Garden Botanika oatmeal & peppermint soap
2 boxes of Stash tea – Chai Spice & Black Currant (decaf)
1 ladies print kitchen apron, handmade by NanaBread

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED TO COMMENTS. THE WINNER OF THE DRAWING HAS BEEN NOTIFIED BY E-MAIL, AND WILL BE POSTED AS SOON AS I HAVE A CONFIRMED MAILING ADDRESS. THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SUSAN FROM FLORIDA. YOU’RE A WINNER! I HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR GIFTS. -NB

Here are my rules:

1. Leave a comment on this post.

2. The selected reader will be notified by e-mail. Once I have a confirmed mailing address, I will announce the recipient of the gift box on my blog.

3. Participation is limited to residents of the United States.

4. One name will be randomly selected on Friday, July 8th at Noon (Central).

Disclaimer: All gift box items were purchased by me with my own money except for the apron, which was handmade by me. None of the products were donated or sponsored in any way, shape or form. They are simply items that I love, shared with one lucky reader.

Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a reader of my blog. Your support and friendship over the past 12 months has meant the world to me, and I look forward to seeing what the next year will bring.

Hugs & birthday kisses to you all,
NanaBread (Jeanne)

Book Recommendation: Plate to Pixel

Plate to Pixel by Helen Dujardin, Wiley Publishing

If you read The Pioneer Woman’s website, you’ll know that she recently posted another “visit to the ranch” giveaway weekend. This one features a late July weekend of macaron baking and food photography tutorials. Did I enter the contest? You betcha. Why? Because I just bought the food photography book published by her special guest, Helene Dujardin. If you’re a food blog junkie, you’ll know her work from her lovely Tartlette blog. I love Helene’s blog for her gorgeous food photography. Yes, her recipes are also stellar. She is a trained pastry chef, after all. But her luscious photographs are like no other. They’re food art. And since I have a new Canon EOS Rebel T2i (my first “big girl” camera) and absolutely no photography experience, I was thrilled to discover that Helene had published a digital food photography and styling guide. I immediately went to Amazon and ordered it, and couldn’t wait to dig in.

What I love most about Helene’s book is that it’s laid out in a start-to-finish manner, beginning with food photography basics and ending with an “after the capture” chapter on photo transfer, editing, storage and copyright tips.

In between, she shares tips for lighting, food staging/styling and composition. Helene shares her knowledge in a straight forward, easy to understand manner. And while I may never have a career as a professional food photographer, I am certain her guide will help me become a better overall photographer.

On that note, I would like to share some news. I was recently contacted by a graphic design company about the use of a photograph that appeared in my blog. It was a photo I took for my carnitas recipe. After exchanging a few e-mails, I agreed to allow them to use the photograph for a marketing campaign if the client chose to include my photo. Well, weeks later, the client did indeed select my photo for inclusion in their campaign, and I received a small check for the limited royalty-free use of my photo. That’s right. In the loosest possible use of the term, I am officially a professional photographer. It may be the world’s shortest lived career, but I was excited none the less. For now, I’m framing the final letter, the check and the photo for posterity’s sake. Even if this turns out to be a one hit wonder, I can at least look at it, smile and remember when.

Note: I’d like to thank Michelle at Brown Eyed Baker blog for introducing me to Plate to Pixel through a recent post. Proof positive, in my opinion, that you can always learn more by reading other bloggers. Thanks, Michelle!

Oh, hail. It’s finally raining in Houston!

Love the rain, but those white blobs are pea & marble sized hail. Yikes!

That’s right, people. For the first time since January of this year (I’m not making this up), we finally got some rain in south Houston. In fact, we got about 40 minutes of rain and about 5 minutes of pea to marble sized hail. TCP and I were so excited about the rain, we didn’t even care about the hail. Not at all.

This pile of pea-sized hail stones pooled by our front door.

Then we looked out the back door and yelled, “The baby pineapple!!!” at the same time. By then, we were getting pummeled, and there was no way to stage a rescue without getting beat to death. Luckily, those big wide fronds did a great job of deflecting the hail stones. A few did land around the pineapple fruit and roll down to sit at the base, but there is no apparent damage to the fruit. The fronds didn’t fare so well. As you can see in this next photo, they suffered substantial hail damage. You can see the white pea-sized dents on the fronds.

The hail left white dents on the pineapple fronds. Ouch!

We’re expecting more storms this week as our record high temperatures meet waves of moisture blowing in off the Gulf of Mexico. Rest assured that I will be crafting some sort of shelter to prevent our baby pineapple from suffering any more trauma, and TCP and I from suffering any more pineapple-based heart palpitations. On the bright side, we finally got some rain!

Normal year-to-date rainfall for the Houston area: 20″
Year-to-date rainfall since January of this year: 1.33″
Average temperature in Houston this time of year: 90F
Previous record temperature for this week (1980): 98F
New record temperature for Houston set this week: 105F
(data courtesy of the Houston Chronicle website)

Is it just me, or does it seem like we’ve had some of the wackiest weather ever this year? Record breaking floods and draught, a record-breaking number of wildfires, late snows and tornadoes. What gives? I’m nervous to think what the hurricane season may bring. I mean, c’mon…. Massachusetts had a tornado! When is the last time anyone heard of a tornado in the Boston area? Feel free to throw in your 2 cents worth. Are you experiencing wacky weather in your area?

Baby Pineapple Update: Day 40

The Grand Dame & her Little Prince - hanging out on Day 40.

Today is Day 40 in our adventure to grow our own pineapple. So far, it’s been glorious. The biggest surprise, besides how fast she’s growing, is the rows of gorgeous purple flowers. I never expected that. In fact, I had no idea it would bloom all around the pineapple. It’s really beautiful. Here’s a close-up of the flowers so you can see them in all their glory:

And now, here’s a photo of the pineapple I got for Mother’s Day. It came from the grocery store. In fact, it is the pineapple we used to create Spike – pineapple plant #2. Notice those golden pentagon shapes on the sides of the pineapple? See those little brown pointed tags sticking out of each pentagon? That’s where the purple blooms emerged and then died back. Who would have guessed?

The store-bought pineapple that birthed Spike.

How cool is that? I had NO idea that those little shaggy brown things on the side of a pineapple used to be gorgeous purple flowers. I’ve learned so much from our pineapple plant. I really have. And because of it, I have a much greater appreciation for every pineapple I see in the grocery store, and for the people who grow them. I wonder if they name their pineapples, too?

Here’s the gratuitous 3-panel shot so you can see how she’s doing. As you can see, the shoots are bulging from the base of the pineapple fruit. I keep expecting them to pop out onto stalks any day now. They’re fascinating. Since we’re hoping to get at least one more pineapple from this plant, we’ll have to cut at least one of the shoots off once they fully emerge. According to my trusted Hawaiian Ag website, I should be able to plant the shoots to create additional plants. Then we’ll have a full-fledged pineapple farm (of 3-4 plants). Okay, it will be more like a pineapple “patch” but I’m okay with that. Overall, things are progressing beautifully. Maybe I’m just a proud pineapple mommy, but I think my baby is turning into one gorgeous little lady. “Who’s a pretty girl?”

To see them up close, click on the photo. To return, just hit your “back” arrow.
