Ziggy was the best friend I could have ever wanted, always loving and loyal. He was there ready to play at a moment’s notice or later in life to relax with you on the couch. He was the smartest dog I ever knew and was great at playing hide and seek and was always ready to scrap. He had a way of knowing when you were not feeling well and would always come by to check on you and comfort you. Recently Nanabread and I have been sick and even in his last days he would come by to check on us and make sure we were alright. Little did we know that he was very sick himself. Last week he started limping so we took him into the vet for an examination. It turned out that his kneecap had slipped out of place. This is not uncommon in small dogs as the groove in their kneecap is shallow and the tendon that sits in the groove can pop out of the groove while jumping. The vet popped the kneecap back in place and gave us some pain medications for him. He was soon walking again on the knee with some tenderness. However a few days later he was limping again, so we took him back in for an XRAY. During the XRAY it was determined that Ziggy had a large cancer mass and his spine was covered in bone spurs. The vet told us he was in constant pain and that the cancer was inoperable due to the size, location, and Ziggy’s age (almost 14 years old). At that time the decision was made to euthanize him as we could not justify extending his suffering just so that we could have more time with him. This decision has been difficult to deal with as we thought the trip to the vet was only for an XRAY. Not being able to say goodbye to him has been the most difficult part to deal with. However we have been comforted with the well wishes from friends and family and the knowledge that he led a full and rich life. I still catch myself looking for him when I think I hear his toenails on the hardwood floor or looking for him at the dinner table begging for a snack. He will live forever in my heart and my memory.

    • Thank you, honey. You said everything I was feeling but couldn’t get on paper through the tears. I miss him so much I can hardly stand it. He was the greatest.

  16. Sending you warmest Easter greetings.
