Travel Tip: See the Oregon Coast

Years ago, my in-laws took an RV down the coast of Oregon, and for years after, they shared stories of that trip and how beautiful it had been. Two years ago, The Complete Package and I decided to follow in their footsteps and drive the Oregon coast. We don’t own an RV, but a rental car works just as well. You see, it doesn’t matter how you get there, you just need to get there. Give yourself at least one week. Two would be even better. You’ll understand why when you get there. Don’t try to rush it. Scenery like this should be savored and deeply appreciated. And you will definitely want to linger.

This story is dedicated to my father-in-law who passed away 2 years ago. Thanks for encouraging us to get out and see the world while we still can.

Absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of one of my favorite movies.. Twilight.. My baby brother is actually moving there tomorrow. So, my sister and I are already planning a trip out there to take in the views!

    • You’re probably too young for this, but seeing the northern coast of Oregon around Astoria reminds me of the movie “Goonies” which was filmed there. Oregon is a wonderful, beautiful, magical place. Let me know what you think after your first visit! I’d love to hear where you went. Best wishes to your brother. I hope he loves it as much as I do.

  2. So, so beautiful. Those pictures could be in a travel magazine. I had no idea Oregon was so gorgeous but I definitely want to go one day. If I tell J.D. his favorite movie “Goonies” was filmed there he’ll be on board! I want to bookmark this page and come back to look at the pictures every day! :)

    • I just saw Goonies again just last month. Hadn’t seen it in years. Such a sweet, goofy movie. Here’s another travel tip about Oregon – it’s even prettier in person. We were there in late August/early September, and saw humpback whales migrating down the coast. They were swimming right off the shore! Unbelievable.

All of my spring breaks were spent on the Oregon coast. My dad and mom loved it there also. We would get up at 3:00 in the morning and drive from Union, Oregon and drive to Lincoln City, Oregon. We would stay a week and have a wonderful time. These are some of my best childhood memories.Your beautiful pictures brought them all flooding back to me . I live in Minnesota now, and soon would like to visit the Oregon coast again.

    • Thank you for sharing that, Linda. I hope you’ll get the chance to return and relive those memories. When I hear someone say that a place can be “good for your soul”, I immediately think of two places – Glacier National Park and the Oregon coast. They are two of those rare, wonderful places that touch your soul and make you want to return again and again.

  4. I absolutely love Oregon. I can’t wait to take my family there to see the Pacific Northwest. Once we’re done changing diapers, the road trips begin!

Gorgeous photos–you have a gift for words and photography.

    • That’s awesome. Nothing beats a family road trip! Unless your dad drives like a bat outta hell and you and your 4 sisters are prone to car sickness. Then it can turn ugly pretty quick. I wish you nothing but great travel wishes. It’s one of the greatest things you can do with your kids. And thanks for the kind words. I appreciate them very much!

  5. oh my. These pictures are absolutely breathtaking!! I had NO idea Oregon had a coast that looked like that!! Wow. Wow. and Wow!!!! Ok, that just added on to my TO DO SOMEDAY destination list!! Thanks so much for sharing these beauties!!

  6. Gorgeous. I never knew Oregon was so beautiful.

    • It absolutely is! My in-laws inspired us to go after talking non-stop about how much they enjoyed it in their RV. We spent a week driving the coast, and it still wasn’t enough time. If I had the chance to do it over again, I’d spend at least 2 weeks and soak in all the sights. It’s simply stunning.

I really wanna go there and drive the coast too. So cool!

    • Everyone should make that drive down the Oregon coast a priority on their travel bucket list. Words just can’t describe how gorgeous it is. We saw humpback whales swimming just off the shoreline. WHALES! It was awesome. Definitely one of my Top 5 places in the US.

  8. These are gorgeous photos. I’m so glad you took the time…

    • Thanks, Sally. It was one of my favorite ‘road trip’ vacations, and it was beautiful beyond words. I’m glad you liked the photos. It’s even prettier in person.

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful photos & enthusiasm for the Oregon coast. I’m headed back out to Oregon to live this time, having traveled through the state a number of times while living in CA and WA. I agree that the Oregon coast is something deeply special and should be savored. How thrilling that I will be an hour’s drive from this world of beauty.

    • Congratulations on your move to Oregon, Lisalea! I’ll admit, I’m a smidge jealous. We love Oregon, especially the coast. How wonderful that you get to live there! We also loved the Wilammette River valley and areas around McMinnville. If you are a lover of fresh fruits and nuts, the orchards in that area are spectacular. Enjoy your time there. It’s a piece of heaven, in my opinion. Best wishes!
