My Guilty Pleasure Food: Bugles

Bugles - My crunchy, guilty pleasure

I know they’re just modified corn pulp pumped full of air, but I can’t help myself….I love Bugles. It’s a love affair I’ve had since I was a kid. In my defense, I only buy one bag every few years. The problem is, once I open them, they’re usually gone in 2 days. It’s disgusting. I used to put them on my fingertips like weird Geisha fingernails when I was younger. Now my fingertips are too big and the Bugles are too narrow. Another guilty pleasure food – a bag of Funions with an ice-cold V8. The Complete Package turned me on to that one. It may sound gross, but it’s actually a delicious combination. I haven’t had it for at least 10 years, but it’s a good one. You should try it if you’re not too grossed out.

I once worked with a woman who was reluctant to admit that her guilty pleasure food was pork rinds. In fact, it took a few drinks to get it out of her. She was so embarrassed, her face actually turned red when she told us. It’s funny how something like a fried snack food can make us feel exhilarated in private and humiliated in public. I guess that’s why they’re called “guilty pleasures.” What are your guilty pleasure snacks? Are you THAT girl who has a hidden box of Ding Dongs in her closet? Do you hide bags of chocolate behind the DVDs in your TV cabinet? Do you secretly buy El Charito frozen enchilada dinners when your spouse is out of town instead of cooking? Or are you more likely to eat ice cream topped with Captain Crunch or Count Chocula in bed late at night? Tell me…what is your guilty pleasure food? I know you have one…we all do.

  1. Bugles on my fingertips is one of the great snack food memories of my time! Yum!

My guilty pleasure…oh, there are so many…but I guess the worst one is a can of cream cheese frosting. Yes. A can of frosting and a spoon is all I need, and I eat until my stomach hurts. Sometimes I have to white knuckle my grocery cart past the wall of cake mix and frosting. It sounds really gross but I have a major sweet tooth! :)

    • Oh, heavens to Betsy…where were you when I made cupcakes this week? You would have passed out if you’d seen the humongous bowl of cream cheese buttercream frosting I made. You really should live closer to me.

  2. Big Sis

Dove dark chocolates. I keep them in my undies drawer; it’s the only place to keep my children out of them. It’s great having squeamish teenagers!!! And when no one is home, it’s a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream.

OK, this is hilarious because I think we all do it and no ones talks about it…ever. My guilty “junk food” pleasure is going to the grocery store by myself and eating a Hostess Cherry Fried Pie on the way home! shh! :)

  4. Sister #3

I wear my junk food addictions with pride! Little Debbie, Hostess, you name it – I am there! And if you stash the good chocolate in the freezer behind the frozen mixed veggies, the kids will never find it ;)

  5. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGLES!!!! I thought I was the only person in the world who liked them!!! Have you ever had the caramel covered Bugles? Heavens to mergatroid! Hard to find but sooooo worth the hunt!

    m ^..^

  6. NanaBread's Baby

Alright, here goes…this could be dangerous because often when Bama Boy is out of town, NanaBread and I are together, but anywhoo…
I lose all control in front of:
    – Plain Ruffles with Hamburger Dills…yes, together
    – Chocolate Donuts (Hostess) and Dr. Pepper
    – Ben & Jerry’s Half-Baked
    – Just about any cupcakes (the cupcake post about killed me from jealousy!)
    – Dark Chocolate-covered peanut butter pretzel sandwiches

I could probably go on, but that’s enough confessing for now.

    • Wow…that’s really something! Nothing on your list surprised me (I’m your mother, and you’re right – we’re usually together when we eat junk like this) EXCEPT the plain Ruffles with hamburger dill pickles slices…together. That’s a new one. I’ve never seen you eat that combination. Now hamburger dills, balogna and mustard sandwiches? Well, you ate your weight in those when you were little. But Ruffles and pickles? I can honestly say I didn’t see that coming. Today, when your dad & I were at the grocery store, we walked right past those peanut butter filled Snyder’s pretzels, and I was right back to last spring when you dipped them in dark chocolate and we ate them until we almost puked. Man, those were good! As my blogger buddy Kandi said, I had to “white knuckle” my grocery cart past them. It was tough.

  7. The Baby

Who needs diamonds, we all know Bugles and black olives are what belong on our fingers. I eat all the stuff listed above, the only difference is… I feel no guilt. Nope, nada, nothing, well, okay, maybe just a tinge when I tell Gabe he can’t have the raw cookie dough from Papa Murphy’s then I eat a finger full while he’s in the bath. He usually catches me and gets to have some too.

I really really try NOT to buy Hostess. I will eat every darn one of them if someone doesn’t hide them first! I love vanilla ice cream, a lil bet ‘melty’ with about a cup full of plain rice krispies that I mix in and a spoonful of smooth pnut butter on the side.

oh man. That is good stuff! :P

Blue Bell’s Caramel Kettle Crunch is my latest addiction. *droooooool*

    • Okay, I love peanut butter ice cream (peanut butter swirled though a creamy vanilla base), but I’ve never had it with Rice Kirspies. That’s interesting. I think I might lean more towards Cocoa Krispies or Count Chocula, but I can also see it with Captain Crunch with Crunchberries. I think you may be on to something here. I haven’t seen the Blue Bell Caramel Kettle Crunch yet, but it sounds interesting, too. My new favorite Blue Bell is a summer flavor – Summer Berry. It’s chock full of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. It’s purple and it’s FABULOUS!! My all-time favorite ice cream, however, is Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia. Have mercy – I could bathe in that stuff.
